Historical note: The First Brigade of the 101st Airborne Division was sent to Vietnam in 1965. It was the third United States Army unit to arrive. In December of 1967, the remainder of the division was deployed to Bien Hoa, South Vietnam in Operation Eagle Thrust. The 101st was the only army division ever airlifted directly into combat. Ronald J. Guerin enlisted in the Army Airborne in 1952 and served in the Special Forces in Germany. He was with the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, between 1956 and 1965. He was sent to Vietnam in 1965 with an assignment as a mortar platoon sergeant. He served a second tour between January 1969 and February 1970, first as first sergeant of a rifle company, then as first sergeant of a Ranger company. From the description of Ronald J.
